AMIZUR SHAPIRA, of blessed memory
Amizur Shapira was 40 when he died. He left behind a wife and two children, as well as two children from a previous marriage.
Shapira was born in Israel and was a resident of Herzliya. He was among the senior short-distance runners in the 1950s.
In 1952, he was qualified as a physical education teacher and became an athletics trainer. He devoted most of his time and efforts to sports and was particularly dedicated to training young athletes. He brought up a generation of champions and record holders.
His most outstanding achievement was the success of his "discovery" - Esther Shacharmarov - whom he handled for 6 hears and led to fame in numerous competitions in Israel and abroad, up to the Munich Olympic Games.
For many years, he served as a teacher and educator at the Wingate Institute's Jewish College.
He was laid to rest in Kiryat Shaul.
